Back in 2006, Kenny Chesney was preparing for one of the biggest tours of his career. The “Flip-Flop Summer Tour” had everything — major sponsors, sold-out stadiums, and a rising teenage star set to open the show: Taylor Swift.
But just days before the tour began, a contract clause from the tour’s sponsor — a beer company — required all performers to be over 21. Taylor was only 17.
Heartbroken and confused, she was pulled from the lineup. For any other artist, this might have been the end. But for Kenny, it was the beginning of a promise.
Without hesitation, he wrote Taylor a check — the full amount she would have earned — with a handwritten note that read: “I’m sorry, kiddo. Someday, you’ll headline your own stadiums.”
