American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton poses for a portrait with her guitar at Dollywood circa 1993 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Since founding the Imagination Library in 1995, Dolly Parton has spent nearly three decades sending free books to children all over the world. The program began serving only families in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee, but eventually expanded across the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Ireland.

As of July 2025, the Imagination Library has given away over 280 million books, with more than 3 million children receiving books in Central Florida alone. Dolly once said: “I want every child to grow up with a library of their own.” It was a dream born from her own childhood, when little Dolly had few books to read but understood the power of imagination.

Among the millions of thank-you letters Dolly has received over the years, one brought her to tears. It came from a 7-year-old girl battling late-stage cancer. She wrote that each month when she received a new book from Dolly, she imagined stepping into the world of its pages — a place with no illness, only adventures, friends, and laughter.

The girl’s mother shared that the last book they received sat beside her hospital bed. Even as her strength faded, she tried to read a few pages before falling asleep, telling her mother: “When I’m gone, send this book back to Miss Dolly, so she’ll know how far I got.”

Recalling the moment she read that letter, Dolly said, “I cried like a baby. We send books to plant dreams, but sometimes those dreams come back and melt your heart.”

Over 280 million books have been sent, but for Dolly, perhaps the greatest gift of all is that small letter — proof that music and books can reach the deepest places in the human heart.

Lyrics:

Back through the yearsI go wonderin’ once againBack to the seasons of my youthI recall a box of rags that someone gave usAnd how my mama put the rags to use
There were rags of many colorsEvery piece was smallAnd I didn’t have a coatAnd it was way down in the fallMama sewed the rags togetherSewin’ every piece with loveShe made my coat of many colorsThat I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a storyFrom the Bible, she had readAbout a coat of many colorsJoseph wore and then she saidPerhaps this coat will bring youGood luck and happinessAnd I just couldn’t wait to wear itAnd mama blessed it with a kiss
My coat of many colorsThat my mama made for meMade only from ragsBut I wore it so proudlyAlthough we had no moneyWell, I was rich as I could beIn my coat of many colorsMy mama made for me
So with patches on my britchesAnd holes in both my shoesIn my coat of many colorsI hurried off to schoolJust to find the others laughingAnd are making fun of meIn my coat of many colorsMy mama made for me
And oh, I couldn’t understand itFor I felt I was richAnd I told ’em of the loveMy mama sewed in every stitchAnd I told ’em all the storyMama told me while she sewedAnd how my coat of many colorsWas worth more than all their clothes
But they didn’t understand itAnd I tried to make them seeThat one is only poorOnly if they choose to beNow I know we had no moneyBut I was rich as I could beIn my coat of many colorsMy mama made for meMade just for me
