They planned to record it together—but fate kept the song forever in demo form.
Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton-John first met in the 1970s, both already global stars but known for their warmth and humor. They appeared on numerous TV specials together, delighting fans with their chemistry.
In 2001, they recorded a demo for a song called “Let the Heart Speak”, intended for Cliff’s upcoming album. The ballad was a tender reflection on friendship that endures time and distance. The first recording was just their voices and a piano—meant to be expanded into a full orchestral version.
Before they could return to the studio, Olivia’s cancer returned. The project was shelved. Years later, when her health improved, they talked about finishing it “when the time is right.”
That day never came. In August 2022, Olivia passed away. Cliff has kept the demo as a private keepsake, never released. In a later interview, he said softly:
“The song remains unfinished… but our friendship never was.”
