Even in the fiercest winds, a song can keep the heart steady.

When Engelbert Humperdinck sees Hurricane Erin spinning on the forecast map, he can’t help but remember a night years ago — a night when he sang through wind and rain, as the audience sat huddled in their raincoats, yet no one left their seat.

It was an outdoor concert along the American coast, planned to finish before the rain arrived. But the weather had other ideas. As the wind began to whistle through the rows of seats and the first drops fell, Engelbert stayed on stage, smiling, holding the microphone firmly, and singing with all his heart. He saw the audience pull their raincoats tight, clasp hands for warmth, but their eyes stayed fixed on him.

“That’s when I realized music can warm you even when the air is freezing,” he once said. After the show, many fans told him it was his voice that made them forget the cold wind and stinging rain.

Now, with Erin predicted to pass over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and possibly grow into a Category 3 hurricane, Engelbert can’t help but think back to that moment. It wasn’t the fiercest storm he’d ever seen, but it was the one that showed him music could be a shelter — not for the body, but for the heart.

Singer Engelbert Humperdinck is shown performing on stage during a live concert appearance on August 21, 1999 in Wallingford, Connecticut.

Storms will come and go, but the memory of an audience sitting quietly in the rain just to hear a love song will always stay with him.

Lyrics:
You hold me in your eyesIn your own special wayI wonder how you knowThe things I never sayI can’t imagine lifeWithout you by my sideThe power of your loveIs all I need tonight
I know there have been timesThat I have caused you painI’d turn them all aroundIf I could start againThere’s something I must sayI know it’s overdueThe sweetest thing I’ve knownOr ever called my ownBegins and ends with you
How I love youHow I love you
The softness of your lipsThe color of your hairThe memory of your touchRemains when you’re not thereThe echoes of your laughterWhen I’m feeling blueThe meaning of my lifeIt all begins with you
So come into my armsLay down by my sideThe moon is always thereTo keep our love alightI’ve reached so very highFor everything that’s mineAnd at the top is youI want you for all timeAnd dream forever you
How I love youHow I love you
The softness of your lipsThe color of your hairThe memory of your touchRemains when you’re not thereThe echoes of your laughterWhen I’m feeling blueThe meaning of my lifeIt all begins with you
So come into my armsLay down by my sideThe moon is always thereTo keep our love alightYou know me like a bookYou’ve read a thousand timesWe know each other’s heartsWe read each other’s mindsThese feelings are always new
How I love youHow I love you
The softness of your lipsThe color of your hairThe memory of your touchRemains when you’re not thereThe echoes of your laughterWhen I’m feeling blueThe meaning of my lifeIt all begins with you
