Even in the fiercest winds, a song can keep the heart steady.
When Engelbert Humperdinck sees Hurricane Erin spinning on the forecast map, he can’t help but remember a night years ago — a night when he sang through wind and rain, as the audience sat huddled in their raincoats, yet no one left their seat.
It was an outdoor concert along the American coast, planned to finish before the rain arrived. But the weather had other ideas. As the wind began to whistle through the rows of seats and the first drops fell, Engelbert stayed on stage, smiling, holding the microphone firmly, and singing with all his heart. He saw the audience pull their raincoats tight, clasp hands for warmth, but their eyes stayed fixed on him.
“That’s when I realized music can warm you even when the air is freezing,” he once said. After the show, many fans told him it was his voice that made them forget the cold wind and stinging rain.
Now, with Erin predicted to pass over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and possibly grow into a Category 3 hurricane, Engelbert can’t help but think back to that moment. It wasn’t the fiercest storm he’d ever seen, but it was the one that showed him music could be a shelter — not for the body, but for the heart.
Storms will come and go, but the memory of an audience sitting quietly in the rain just to hear a love song will always stay with him.
🎵 Suggested listening: Engelbert Humperdinck – How I Love You
You hold me in your eyes In your own special way I wonder how you know The things I never say I can’t imagine life Without you by my side The power of your love Is all I need tonight
I know there have been times That I have caused you pain I’d turn them all around If I could start again There’s something I must say I know it’s overdue The sweetest thing I’ve known Or ever called my own Begins and ends with you
How I love you How I love you
The softness of your lips The color of your hair The memory of your touch Remains when you’re not there The echoes of your laughter When I’m feeling blue The meaning of my life It all begins with you
So come into my arms Lay down by my side The moon is always there To keep our love alight I’ve reached so very high For everything that’s mine And at the top is you I want you for all time And dream forever you
How I love you How I love you
The softness of your lips The color of your hair The memory of your touch Remains when you’re not there The echoes of your laughter When I’m feeling blue The meaning of my life It all begins with you
So come into my arms Lay down by my side The moon is always there To keep our love alight You know me like a book You’ve read a thousand times We know each other’s hearts We read each other’s minds These feelings are always new
How I love you How I love you
The softness of your lips The color of your hair The memory of your touch Remains when you’re not there The echoes of your laughter When I’m feeling blue The meaning of my life It all begins with you
