In a long-awaited move that has stunned fans and music lovers alike, the legacy of Merle Haggard — one of country music’s most influential voices — is finally being immortalized in bronze. The Bakersfield Californian announced that a life-size statue of “The Hag” will be unveiled at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield, California, in October 2025, nearly a decade after his passing.

The statue, sculpted by world-renowned artist Benjamin Victor, will depict Merle Haggard with his guitar slung across his shoulder, wearing his signature hat and coat — a look that defined an era of outlaw country. What makes this statue even more special is that it’s not just a tribute to his music, but also to his spirit, resilience, and roots in the San Joaquin Valley.

The announcement came as a surprise to many, given that plans for a Haggard statue had stalled for years due to logistical and political disagreements. But thanks to the combined efforts of the Haggard family, local officials, and private donors, the project was revived earlier this year and has now reached completion.

Merle’s son Ben Haggard shared an emotional message on social media:

“My dad never wanted to be worshipped. But I think he’d be proud to know that the town he loved never forgot him.”

The unveiling ceremony will feature live performances, video tributes, and special guest appearances from artists who were deeply inspired by Haggard’s music, including Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, and Kacey Musgraves. Fans from across the nation are expected to attend what many are calling a “once-in-a-lifetime moment for country music.”

This statue doesn’t just capture Merle Haggard the musician — it captures the soul of a working-class America, the fight of a man who rose from San Quentin Prison to country royalty, and the poetic honesty of a voice that spoke for millions.
