On the night of Saturday, June 13, 2020, Katherine Williams-Dunning, daughter of country music legend Hank Williams Jr., died in a tragic car accident in Henry County, Tennessee. She was 27 years old.

What happened

Katherine (“Katie” to her family) was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe towing a boat southbound on Highway 79, near Antioch Road. At approximately 7:44 p.m., her vehicle crossed the median separating northbound and southbound lanes, rolled over, crossed into the opposite lanes, and came to rest on the shoulder.

Her husband, Tyler Dunning (29), was in the passenger seat. He was badly hurt and was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At the time, he was “awake and responsive,” although the full extent of his injuries had not been disclosed.

About Katherine Williams-Dunning

  • Katherine was the youngest daughter of Hank Williams Jr. and his wife Mary Jane Thomas.

  • She did not pursue a musical career like some of her siblings. Instead, she had married Tyler in 2015 and they had two young children: son Beau and daughter Audrey.

  • She founded the clothing brand Weston Jane, whose mission was to empower mothers and women – other mothers printed her designs, etc.

Reaction & aftermath

The Williams family and wider community were struck with deep sorrow. Holly Williams, her sister, shared a family photo and expressed that they had no idea it would be the last one together with Katie.

Her brother Sam posted that he was “at a complete loss,” and said “life will never be the same” without her.

Authorities in Tennessee are continuing to investigate the crash, seeking to determine exactly what caused the vehicle to cross the median and roll over.

Legacy & significance

Although Katherine wasn’t a performer in the public eye like some of her family, her role as a mother, wife, business owner, and community advocate resonated with many. She was quietly building something meaningful – supporting mothers, supporting women, putting family first. Her untimely death highlights how fragile life can be, even when lived away from the spotlight.

Her story reminds us of the importance of kindness, appreciation for family moments, and that sometimes the most lasting impact doesn’t come from fame but from the love we share daily.
