Sometimes the storm changes more than just your route.
When Hurricane Erin’s forecast appears on the screen, Dwight Yoakam can’t help but think back to his long Southern tours — where the weather sometimes decided his route for him.
Once, while heading to Florida for a concert, an urgent storm warning forced the crew to change course and head to Georgia instead. The original show was canceled, but Dwight wasn’t about to let the night go to waste. He called a small theater in Savannah to see if they could open that evening. The result was an impromptu show — no advertising, no big lights, yet the seats were full.
“Storms can change your path, but sometimes they take you exactly where you need to be,” he recalls. That night, Dwight altered his setlist, adding songs that fit the rainy, intimate mood, as if to chase away the chill outside.
Now, with Erin predicted to strengthen to Category 3 as it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, Dwight knows many in the South will have to prepare for unexpected changes. For him, a storm isn’t just about wind speed or rainfall — it’s about the moments you’re forced to adapt, and how sometimes those changes create the best memories.
